Soda Fired Pieces
Soda-firing ceramics involves spraying a diluted solution of sodium carbonate into a hot kiln toward the end of the firing process. The intense heat causes the soda to volatilize and react with the silica and alumina in the clay body, forming a natural glaze on the surface. Because this process creates a distinctive and often glossy finish, traditional glazes are typically not used on the exterior of soda-fired work. However, to ensure my pieces are food-safe and functional for everyday use, I apply a clear glaze to the interior surfaces.
